When NELUG sponsored a tree for the Festival of Trees benefit for the American Kidney Foundation,
I wanted to donate an original set to place beneath our tree. The tree and the gifts beneath it
were auctioned off to raise money for the foundation. I look forward to participating in
this event every year.
Although neither the event nor my club are religious in focus, I thought it might be appropriate
to create a nativity scene out of LEGO. I had recently discovered the works of The Reverend Brendan Powell Smith
and was clearly influenced by his skillful LEGO modeling and photography to illustrate stories from the Bible.
Particularly fascinating is his careful selection of minifig heads which have the perfect
facial expression to carry each character through an entire chapter.
So I built a nativity scene, complete with shepherds, sheep, an angel, a little drummer boy, wise men three, and the camel they rode in on.
I was very pleased with how it came out, so I built two more.
The original was donated with the NELUG tree, the second was a gift to my parents,
and the third is still in my posession today. I had a lot of fun recreating this traditional Christmas decoration
and I hope my family will enjoy it for many years to come.
